Q: I’m having a trial 2 weeks of cutting out wheat from my diet. What can I eat?
I’ve felt ill my whole life.. tired, lethargic, achey, i have massive dark circles under my eyes, watery/itchy eyes, rashes etc (All symptoms of wheat intolerance/allergy) So I have decided to have a go of cutting wheat out to see if it makes me feel better. Only problem is, Im worried that I wont be able to keep it up AND continue a balanced diet…
So I was wondering if anyone could guide me as to what food I should eat?/What foods I cannot eat ?

Also.. has anyone done this before? How did it go?

Cheers guys!

A: The BBC seem to have a good collection of advice and recipes on their food site (link below). More generally, search for “gluten free”.

If you’re in the UK, you can get gluten-free food on prescription under certain conditions. There are some decent gluten-free cake mixes and flour mixes available, even in most big supermarkets – most have gluten-free pasta and bread (although you’ll have to try them to see whether you like them – only some are worthwhile).

For carbohydrates, potatoes and rice are fine. Meat is fine. All fruit/veg is fine. So, keeping a balanced diet is fine, although the carbohydrates are more limited.

Q: how do i find a good complementary doctor in my area?
I know a person who was diagnosed with alzheimer’s. I don’t know how many people know about this, but there is something called celiac disease which is an intolerance to wheat which can sometimes result in symptoms similar to alzheimer’s. I think this person may have celiac because one symptom of wheat intolerance is a craving for it and this guy inhales quantities of cakes and pastries and bread on a daily basis the likes of which I have never seen before. There is a well known doctor in New York who could examine this person and prescribe diet and nutrients if celiac seems possible, but NY is too far away. How can I find a doctor near me who would have the expertise to address this situation?

A: Go to www.acam.org

Q: Could somebody have celiac disease and be allergic to wheat at the same time?
Okay, if somebody gets and itchy rash, constipation, SEVERE joint pain (on all joints and knuckles), and gets muscle aches after consuming wheat products its this usually a symptom of celiac disease/gluten intolerance or a wheat allergy? Also, could somebody have both a true immune system wheat allergy as well as celiac disease? What about being lactose intolerant and allergic to milk at the same time?

A: The symptoms of celiac, gluten intolerance and wheat allergies can all be very similar. Sadly since each of them are different issues, you would have to undergo different testing procedures to know for sure which and how many you have. It is quite possible to have all at the same time too.

You can also have both lactose intolerance and milk allergies. Some even say that the failure to treat one creates the other (found in the book “Milk is Not for Every Body”).

Q: Symptoms of Gluten Intolerance? Anyone have info?
This isn’t going to be pretty….

I have been suffering from morning diarhea for a few months. It comes and goes but I’m usually fine most of the rest of the day. I was wondering if maybe I had a food intolerance. Then today, I went to a friends house and ate a half sandwich with ‘wheat meat’ or Seiten? It’s made from gluten flour. My stomach started hurting and I was very gassy. It all went away in about an hour so I’m just not sure.

Does anyone know if these are symptoms of a gluten intolerance and if I can have a medical test to confirm?
What is the difference between a gluten intolerance and a wheat allergy?

A: The symptoms of gluten intolerance are of varied types, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, joint pain, etc. The situation can even weaken the system, disabling it to absorb nutrients from dietary items. Medical conditions such as malnutrition, anemia, weight loss and osteoporosis can also occur due to this. The peculiarity of the diseases is that different people experience different symptoms, while some of them might not encounter even a single one. This makes the diagnosis difficult and delayed. The analysis usually involves blood test or biopsy of the small intestine. As a precaution, such people should remove all types of gluten from their diet. Given below are some probable symptoms of gluten intolerance.
Sudden weight loss or weight gain
Nutritional deficiencies due to mal-absorption, leading to low iron levels
Gastro-intestinal problems (bloating, pain, gas, constipation, diarrhea)
Fat in the stools (due to poor digestion)
Aching joints
Depression
Eczema
Head aches
Exhaustion
Irritability and behavioral changes
Infertility, irregular menstrual cycle and miscarriage
Cramps, tingling and numbness
Slow infant and child growth
Decline in dental health
Contrary to the general belief, gluten intolerance is not a food allergy. Rather, it is a sort of a genetic disorder, which primarily deals with sensitivity to the protein named gluten. This protein is commonly found in all types of grains, particularly wheat, barley, oats and rye. The condition arises when the immune system of the body fails to recognize the gluten protein and deems it as foreign. This leads to inflammation and damage in the lower digestive tract (the intestines). Thus, people prone to gluten intolerance can damage their small intestines, even on the consumption of a small amount of it.

Q: Do I have Wheat Intolerance, my stomach is in so much pain after I eat any wheat products.?
Its horrible, and this has recently started happening to me. I am a Vegetarian, but i also consume Wheat products. I believe i started to have all of these horrible symptoms in June this year. Every time i ate any foods that contained Wheat, Rye, Barley, etc. My stomach would get bloated “really” bad, and i’m talken bad. I would get really tired, and i would get these massive headaches. I didn’t pick up on it till after a while, i thought something was really wrong with me. But i’m a health freak, i knew it probley had something to do with the foods i ate. So to come to find out I can’t handle to eat Wheat.

But i read that people who have Coliac Disease feel nausea, and feeling like there going to throw up. I dont feel like throwing up, but my stomach hurts extremely bad. It wont go away till after 5 hours, and im really struggling. Wheat products keeped me full while i also had Vegetables and fruits. I cant have Wheat products anymore, and i dont eat meat. Im NOT getting any protein.

What is wrong with me =’(.

A: You maybe gluten intolerant. Stop eating gluten free products and make a food dairy for the week and you will be able to narrow it down.

Just try different eating patterns and keep a food dairy. This is how I found out that I was gluten intolerant and lactose intolerant.

Good Luck and I hope this helps

Q: Do I have Wheat Intolerance? My stomach hurts really bad after i eat anything with Wheat in it :( ?

A: You may need to get tested for Celiac’s Disease to find out what’s wrong. It does sound like you have allergies and there are specialist who can give you proper tests to find out. Elisabeth Hasselbeck on The View has it and she did a segment on the show. She would get violently sick after eating and didn’t know why. It was pretty interesting. I don’t have a wheat allergy but I’ve started eating a gluten free diet for other reasons. You have to be really careful about reading labels, finding the right replacements for your food and to avoid eating out as the counters and cooktops may be shared with wheat items.

Don’t feel discouraged if you have it. There’s so many good replacement foods out there than there were decades ago. It just takes learning a new routine.

Q: medical advice for exploring abdomin r/o CA?
I am seeing a CA ono/gyno Monday i am having an emergency persae stat upper GI of the sigmoid colon, due to my celiac wheat intolerance’s symptoms all test normal thus far but losing wt(21 lbs) via chronic diarrhea and Dr said hes seen sigmoid carcinoids in woman which is suppose to be rare, persae i’m the 4th in his practice with like symptoms sooo since i have a suspicious ovary now , i think the ca has metas to the sigmoid since the colonoscopy and gastroscopy proved no ca NOrmal no bacteria plasia just severe inflammation NO crohnes either so , so my dr said i don’t want the GYNO opening you up until we know if the sigmoid is shows ca, so does anyone one know if sigmoid colon is re sectioned for carcinoids or remove the spots? i told my dr i don’t’ want chemo or radiation if I have ca just remove my organs and live and let live,or do we leave the sigmoid alone and live and let live ? so he said sigmoid ca is low grade ca highly treatable but what does that mean?
Intelligent answers would be nice, or experienced with such issues? searchin on MED HELP also i am medically oriented so just lay the cards down,
this sounds like me ?? i don’t have celiac diease but i tolerate the diet but still losing wt with chronic diarrhea Autoimmune metaplastic atrophic gastritis is an inherited autoimmune disease that attacks parietal cells, resulting in hypochlorhydria and decreased production of intrinsic factor. Consequences include atrophic gastritis, B12 malabsorption, and, frequently, pernicious anemia. Risk of gastric adenocarcinoma increases 3-fold. Diagnosis is by endoscopy. Treatment is with parenteral vitamin B12.

A: OK, so you haven’t been told that you have cancer at all? You just have issues since you have celiac disease, and have had some diarrhea to the point of losing weight. I’ll give you a web site that is a bit advanced on medical language, but can be extremely helpful to you. If you need to look the words up, you can always do that, I know I’ve had to many times…lol.

Q: Why do I feel tired after eating Wheat/Gluten foods?
I have been tested for celiac, and the results were negative. So I was still wondering why I feel tired after consuming gluten foods. My fatique kicks in at around 5 mins after consumption of wheat. I also get symptoms like abdominal swelling and gas.

Could Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance possibly make you feel tired, after consuming wheat? Or is this all psychological?

A: It doesn’t have to be a celiac problem. If you complain of gas and abdominal swelling and FATIGUE after eating a bread or high carb food product, then it sounds like it could be a yeast overgrowth in your body.

Or it could be all in your head, regardless, you should try some Probiotics, they helped me loads with your issues.

Q: What does it feel like if you have a wheat intolerance?
I’ve done lots of research and I see the same types of symptoms, bloating, cramping, diarrhea…but I was wondering if there was other feelings that people have felt? For years I have felt a constant growling in my stomach, more so after I eat and when I am eating healthfully…whole wheat bread, fruit, etc. I have been to countless doctors who really don’t have any answers. One doc told me to eat more, I was 15 lbs overweight and following a sensible eating program. The growling is annoying and often does lead to me giving up for a high fat, high calorie meal after feeling like I’ve been starving all day. I don’t seem to have as big of a problem when I eat refined flour breads or tortillas. Sometimes gas and bloating are involved, too. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I don’t want to do elimination diet without proof that there could be a problem. I don’t cook much, so without bread, my healthy lunches of whole wheat turkey sandwiches would be replaced with I don’t know…
I’ve been to a gastroenterologist, no tests and no answers. I am getting a celiac panel, but I have heard that if you don’t have celiac disease, then a simple intolerance won’t show on the test. I’ve tried beano, multi enzyme supplements, lots of water. The growling/gurgling gets so bad that I gag. Nobody takes it seriously. But feeling like you are constantly starving really affects my quality of life. It has to be more than digestion/boborgymi. I eat small meals every few hours and shouldn’t feel hungry. I’m miserable and don’t know what to do.

A: You can get a skin sensitivity test to see if you are allergic to the common food triggers, like wheat, eggs and the like. Or you can visit a gastroenterologist (a doc who specializes in digestive disorders) to get a qualified opinion.

Q: Yeast, wheat or lactose intolerance?
I was wondering if someone could shed a little light on this subject for me… I have had a problem of a really dry throat that i continuously have to clear to the point that sometimes it starts to really irritate me!

I usually find that it is at its worse after drinking wheat beer, or eating bread, or drinking red wine…

Does anyone know if these sound like symptoms of something in particular?

Thank you

A: I agree with others not lactose, okay look at in all of these foods. Do a elimination test on yourself. Food Acid, Citric Acid or Ascorbic Acid would be in all three but they are in 90% + processed foods anyhow. Next thing doesn’t sound like you gluten intolerant but this only in wheat beer and bread. Any how any products with Barley, Rye, Oats, wheat, Spelt would effect you too. Okay lets move on to wine what has that got that can effect you the same as other two only thing that makes sense is yeast. I don’t know read your label on bottle etc, maybe it’s just your body trying to tell you it does not agree with what you are eating.
a Sensitivity has developed maybe it best if you look for alternatives to these foods.

Q: Wheat Free Pasta – Best/Tastiest Brand in UK?
I am going to attempt to go wheat free to help my IBS symptoms, but have tried wheat free products previously and did not like them, so looking for any suggestions for the better tasting ones out there, I also don’t eat fish or meat and have intolerance to the onion family of foods so will need some sort of sandwich/pasta to take to work daily. Many thanks

A: The shops sell corn, rice, spelt and other on wheat ones, and they are very good, I am a former chef from Canada, and have chef mates in the UK that have used them in the restaurants and bistros, I like them all, some cook quicker than wheat based ones, rice is available in alot of the Asian shops in fine, medium and wide types, you can add your favourite sauces, sauteed veg, meats or chicken, even plain with a bit of butter and cheese for a light supper. Now th shops to have non wheat breads, rice and others, onions can be substituted with other veg for flavour.

Q: How long does it take for diahhrea to happen after eating a food my body won’t tolerate?
I’m trying to figure out if I have a gluten (wheat) intolerance. After 4 days of a gluten-free diet, I ate a slice of bread to see what would happen and if the symptoms would return. I had diahhrea about 40 minutes later. Could that slice of bread triggered diahhrea that quickly?

A: yes i think it could of triggered the diarrhea it can happen within an hour or two or when you wake in the morning.

hope this helped

Q: Is this normal cystitis or symptoms of something else?
Four months ago I suffered from a bad dose of cystitis, severe burning pain when passing urine, blood was present in the urine, I ran a fever and had severe nausea, heaving and retching whenever I went to the loo. After about ten days it went away, but two weeks later it came back just as strong. By the time I could get to the doctor, the main infection had passed, therefore my urine samples came back clear. I was put on antibiotics due to continuing feelings of discomfort which caused a very severe case of thrush.
Since then, I have suffered two more cases of severe cystitis, meaning I have now had 4 cases in the space of 4 months, which seems unusually high to me. Not only this, but the feelings of discomfort are not going away between infections. I have a constant need to urinate but without any pain and it is very uncomfortable, and if I have not drunk enough water in the day then I have painful burning spasms in my urethra that last a few hours. I am currently taking Cranberry capsules and D-mannose to try and ease my symptoms and they are not working.
There is a history of wheat intolerance in my family, is it possible that my problems are being caused by an intolerance or severe yeast infection? My question basically is, does this sound normal, and if not, what could be the reasons for my problems? I cant see myself coping like this for much longer, it is causing me some depression and would greatly appreciate any advice at all.
Thanks

A: It sounds as if you may have had pyelitis or pyelonephritis rather than simple cystitis, which is confined to the bladder. These are more serious and may scar and damage the kidney. Neither cranberry in ANY form or D-mannose are really of any use in managing cystitis, let alone infections that have ascended to the kidneys. Your dubious family history of wheat intolerance and your concerns about yeast infections are not going to be at all relevant either.

You clearly need futher MSSUs sent and probably still require antibiotics. UTIs, including simple cystitis are one of the few routine infections that should probably ALWAYS be medically treated .

Q: Possible medical basis for ingested animal protein intolerance?
For the past couple of months I’ve been experiencing mild to severe GI distress (variable- anything from heartburn to vomiting and/or diarrhea) after eating animal proteins. It started with eggs and has manifested with chicken, pork and beef. I consume little to moderate amounts of dairy, but haven’t had any noticeable problems with this food group yet. Haven’t tried eating fish yet, but at this rate I’m scared to.

My family is rural. Meats are from local farms or grocers. All food safety precautions are taken during handling, cooking, and leftover storage. Meals are standard family fare. The rest of my family has zero problems. Symptoms are not from herbs, spices, sauces, or condiments. Most meats are baked, broiled, or are in soups or stews.

Possibly relevant is an increasing sensitivity to wheat based carbs. Soy intake is kept to bare minimum. I can only eat so many meals of veggies, oatmeal, rice, potatoes, grits… Any answers, ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

A: It sounds like you might have CELIAC DISEASE. You seem to have trouble digesting glutens and proteins…w/ time, you might discover that you have other food intolerances or allergies, as well, but you’ll find out if/when you get a reaction.

I started out w/ celiac disease symptoms (and I’ve always had discomfort w/ dairy, soy, and other proteins), and then I developed full-blown sulfite allergies, so I just want to put that out there, in case you’re wondering why you’re still reacting to foods, even after eliminating all glutens, for example.

Go ahead and Google your inquiries…you’ll find a lot of info out there. Make sure you check multiple sources, and if certain sites say that a given food is on the safe list, but your body tells you otherwise, trust your body.

There are lots of online forums, so you’ll probably find out lots of helpful info from celiac forums and other forums that are relevant to you.

Q: Do I have a food intolerance?
I have been getting really bad stomach aches and nausea after eating bread. At first, it was just after eating white bread, so I switched to wheat. Now, after eating wheat, the same thing is happening. I already have gone to the doctor and have gotten a blood test, and they told me nothing was wrong. How do I get rid of my symptoms (stomach pain, nausea)? And do I have an intolerance?

A: who knows? increase your probiotic intake, avoid the trigger foods, keep a food diary, and see a GI doctor.
