Q: Can ritalin be used for chronic fatigue?
I’ve been in chronic pain for several years and, while I use cymbalta to tone it down and keep my mood elevated, I am always tired. I exercise and have been doing regular physical therapy for over a year, but I’m still in pain and still tired. My diet is healthy, but I’ve been drinking so much coffee for the last few years that I’ve developed severe acid refluxe. Until now, coffee has been the only thing that remotely gets me going. Now I can’t drink it and wonder if ritalin is ever used for this sort of situation.

A: ritalin is serious stuff and should not be used to stay awake just for fun. it can be very addictive and that’s why it is a class 2 drug and not something like no doze thats otc … talk to your doctor

Q: Can you get Ritalin without a presciption?
I am 48 years old, and post-chemo for Lymphoma. I have NO energy and I gained a ton of weight, due to the prednisone in my treatment. I also have ‘chemo-brain’. [cognitive impairment following chemo] My treatment was two years ago, and these symptoms are NOT going away. I’m still gaining weight at a slow rate, no matter what I do. I also have chemo-induced menopause.

So, I’m FAT with NO energy to exercise. I barely make it working 8 hours at a desk job. My doctors will not give me anything to help speed up metabolism, increase energy, increase mental sharpness and lose weight. I know it’s my responsibility to exercise and eat right. I’m doing ok with eating [though I'm still gaining], but I have NO energy to exercise and everything hurts or causes soreness.

I have read and heard that Ritalin in adults can alleviate some of these things. I.e. can help with metabolism, energy, and metal sharpness. If this is true, how do I get some Ritalin or a prescription? Thanks.

A: As everyone else already stated, you do need a prescription for Ritalin. It is a controlled drug, so not only do you need a prescription, they send a copy of your accepting the drug to State authorities; possibly even Federal. Basically whatever the procedure, the government keeps a record of everyone who has a prescription for ritalin, so that person doesn’t get more than one prescription from different doctors, etc. That’s because this drug can be abused and a person can become addicted to it and it has to be monitored, so you must be under a doctor’s care. Plus, it is not meant to be a weight loss pill or something to increase you energy.

If you want to lose weight, take CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) made by Tonelin. This helps your body to naturally burn off fat cells.

For physical and mental energy, you can take Ginkgo Biloba. Ginseng is great for increasing physical energy. You should also be on high dose multivitamin that is high in antioxidants since your body has been through so much.

For your chemo brain, taking high choline Lecithin 2 – 3 times a day will begin to feed your brain. It helps to prompt acetylcholine in the neurotransmitters of the brain, improving memory. Fish Oil can also be taken, but not one or the other; both.

If the chemo caused you to have some necrosis, you can take Alpha Lipoic Acid. I don’t know why, but it helps to repair the nerves. This actually will also support your brain as well.

You should probably also take Flor Essence because it will help to clean out the toxins that are built up in your body and brain so you can feel better and function better.

Juicing 1 to 2 times a day with ORGANIC fruits and vegetables will revitalize you. As I have stated before, I actually felt like I got a blood transfusion afterward and could feel the life surging through my body.

This will help your ability to begin to exercise. They say if you briskly walk 5 hours a week, it decreases the chance of cancer coming back, plus it will have the added bonus of helping you to lose weight.

You want to stay away from sugar, not only for the weight, but also cancer thrives on it and it saps out your energy. It will work against you. I’d also stay away from sugar substitutes that aren’t natural. There’s one that is all natural from Central and South America called Stevia. You need a lot less of it and it won’t have any adverse affects on your body or compromise you for possibly getting cancer again.

I have a few links below that might be of help to you.

You are in my prayers. Good luck…

Q: if drugs like ritalin and adderall were taken off the market would you still not believe in ADHD?
consider the following hypothetical situation:
no medications are allowed to exist
good, effective, loving parents
therapy
behavioural training
good diet
very little TV computer videogames
plenty of exercise and sleep
low grades
normal to high intelligence
no learning disabilities or emotional problems or other mental problems
and the kid meets all the criteria and has all the problems assocaited with it
does ADHD STILL not exist?

ADHD isnt about thinking slowly its about not being able to control what you pay attention to

A: I dont’ think ADHD really has anything to do with parenting, or computer videogames…It’s definatly a real disorder..

I just think that it’s over diagnosed by parents/doctors/schools who don’t know how to change what they’re doing to better serve a child’s education… it’s WAY easier to make everyone learn the same way all together than treat every child as an individual.

That said, there are plenty of kids who NEED the meds to function even with in accomidating schools… it depends on the severity of the situation…

Q: Dexies or Ritalin for weight loss?
Which is the better option/ what are the comparative effects of each?

I already live a healthy lifestyle- exercise 5/6 days a week, eat small meals 6 times a day & I always have – I just gained a considerable amount of weight over the holidays and am looking for a quick fix. I am also a student at the moment, if that helps (and am looking for a little extra study stamina).

So please, no judgement, and no shameless advertising for various weight loss website scams..
just knoweledgable advice!

A: If you are looking just for weightloss, then any form of EXTENDED release ADHD medication is worth looking into. Concerta, Ritalin XR, adderall XR are good choices. Take the lowest dose possible and if it is not working as well try going up A LITTLE. Good luck.

Q: ADHD Drug Help – Ritalin?
I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 5. I’m not 23 and I have always taken Ritalin on an “as-needed” bases. I’m not fond of the drug but it works when I need it to. Lately I have been getting really bad heart burn and noticing my heart beat when ever I take the Ritalin. I don’t want to say my heart is beating faster/harder because in reality I just become severely aware of it. I told my doctor and she told me I would get over it but that isn’t good enough . . . I’m really afraid of heart damage. Any one have any advise or been through the same thing? Any one know any alternatives or Ritalin? Any help/advise/experiences would be welcomed! Any one know any non-drug therapies to help with ADHD (E.X. coffee, pulling sugar out of diet, exercise, sleep, etc [and yes, I have tried all of those and sleep and exercise work best])

A: I got sick at nine months old and was found to have the ADD in early school. Then I got sick with three bugs at the same time and then I was Hyper. I don’t know why they keep these two problems pushed together like ADHD; unless it is for drugs.
When I was twelve and in a school for problem children I saw a 9 year old boy and a woman in her 30s arguing back and forth, back and fourth,… They would not cut it out! I realized the woman was not any older than the boy, psychologically. And I decided to put a strong hold on my temper. I was soon gone from there and have only lost my temper once since 1969. Willpower is the answer. If you are not having temper tantrums, are controlling yourself. Then you wouldn’t even need the drug. It has nothing to do with the ADD part.

Q: Does Ritalin need to be prescribed by a psychiatrist or can a medical doctor of general practice do so?
I’ve been having a lot of trouble concentrating lately and I’ve been thinking about Ritalin as a possible aid, but I don’t know if I need to make a special appointment with a psychiatrist or if I can just go see my normal family medical doctor to talk about it.
I know it used to be a psychiatric drug only, but I was wondering if medical doctors now also prescribe it (I have no relationship with a psychiatrist and it would just be so much easier to do it through my family doctor if I could).

I’m not depressed or anything, and I don’t feel particularly stressed – it is purely a concentration issue. I’ve tried getting more sleep, less sleep, more caffeine, less caffeine, more exercise, etc, but nothing seems to work. My mind is just distracted and likes to wander off when I’m about 80% done with something. (Not joking, I’ve taken more than 20 minutes to write this far into this post already because I keep wandering off.)

I’m in my mid-30’s, healthy, smart, and generally wary of drugs as a solution to a problems, but this behavior is very unlike me and I’ve already tried controlling most of the other variables in my power. I’m starting to get worried that it might negatively impact my job performance (which in this economy, I can’t risk). I just want to see if it is a valid solution for giving myself that bump back on the right track, i just don’t know who I need to see about it.

A: Your doctor can prescribe medication but may refer you to a psychiatrist to do an assessment on you. First step is make an appointment with your GP to have a chat.

Good luck

Q: What to do when both adderall and ritalin stop working?
Before I go on, just wanted to say that I don’t need any lectures or personal opinions of how bad stimulants are.

That being said…. I started off on ritalin, took it for a year, and then it stopped working. My doctor then put me on adderall, which I’ve been on for a year and a half now. Half the time it works, half the time it doesn’t. Told my doc this, and she put me back on ritalin because I hadn’t taken it in a while, and she thought that my body would take it as an almost new chemical.

Anyone experienced this before? Where do you go from here? Is there any other comparable medications to try? OR are there any tips to make adderall more effective?

I’ve already tried several non-stimulant medications, as well as a natural diet and exercise routine.

Frustrated as hell though because I can’t focus. PLEASSSE yahoo answers, someone tell me that I’m not alone, and tell me how you got through it.

THX, and God Bless

A: Keep working with your doctor. Hopefully your doctor will be able to prescribe something else to help you. There must be more medications that have the same affect as Ritalin and Aderal. I have been taking Ritalin to help my energy level and concentration for a couple of years. I try not to think about how much it’s working or not working. I hope you will be doing better. Good Luck.

Q: How do you increase the production of Dopamine in your brain?
How can you increase the amount of Dopamine your brain produces without using AHDH medication such as Ritalin.
Can you make your body and brain produce more through diet and/or exercises?
If so, what foods and types of exercises will work best?

A: - Ripe bananas; the ones with brown spots on them are the ones that have the highest levels of dopamine.

- Eat lots of fruit and vegetables which contain antioxidants and this lowers your free radicals which lower dopamine levels. Best choices – red beans, blueberries, cranberries, artichokes, prunes and strawberries.

- Reduce sugary foods and saturated fats, which lower dopamine levels in the bloodstream.

- Cut out caffeine and alcohol, which both cause dopamine levels to sink.

- Almonds, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds which have tyrosine in them.

- Eat plenty of dairy products, which they have tyrosine in them as well. Also the protein which is in chicken, fish and eggs.

- Eat plenty of carbohydrates – low-carb diets are notorious for causing depression from low dopamine levels. There’s a book called “Potatoes Not Prozac” which discusses the importance of carbohydrates.

- Take vitamins C and E for their antioxidants.

- Meditate to reduce stress, as stress lowers dopamine levels.

- Get plenty of sleep; lack of sleep lowers dopamine levels.

- Exercise is important, and it needs to be endurance-based eg yoga, swimming, long-distance running and cycling. However, TOO MUCH exercise will lower dopamine levels, so don’t overdo it. Exercise to the point where you feel good and where you get a better night’s sleep afterwards.

Q: 3 Red Bulls and 3 Ritalin pills a day…unhealthy?
I’m a 19-year old full-time university student double-majoring in Accounting and Economics (taking 15 units) and I have a full-time job, and a part-time volunteer job on weekends.

I drink 3 sugar-free Red Bulls a day, as well as 1 cup of Yerba Mate and 1 cup of green tea.

I also have ADD, so I take 2 or 3 Ritalins a day (5mg).

Even after all this, I *still* don’t have enough energy, and I’m STILL overweight even though I exercise 2 hours a day and eat 2000 calories. :-( I’m afraid if I quit the Red Bulls, I’ll be even more tired and gain weight, because my metabolism will drop even more.

A: sounds like you’ve become dependent on the red bulls :(

the ritalin is okay IF PRESCRIBED the dose you are taking

other than that, I think you need to cut back on the Red Bull, perhaps you should take some yoga to invigorate yourself naturally

I’m not paid to say this but the 5 hour energy shots are great for exercise, I don’t feel the crash and they are a GREAT immunity booster when I’m around sick people

I also feel energetic and capable of taking on anything…or anyone

and I can still go to bed whenever I want to when on the energy shot, granted I do not take them everyday, sometimes I get erratic heart palpitations from taking them, but they’re great for those overnight shifts

Q: I get bad anxiety when I work out or do anything phsical.?
I hate it, im afraid to exercise or do anything really physical cause when I do I get anxiety in my head for hours after wards and it gets me really sad, to the point im deppresed and I hate myself.

The meds I take are. lorazepam 0.5 mg, paxil 40 mg and Ritalin 10 mgs.

please help, also is anyone else like this?

A: I had overwhelming anxiety. It turned out to be my use of Splenda. Yup Splenda.

Some fitness drinks, like Propel are loaded with it.

I like to say sucralose, not Splenda, because that is what Splenda is. And it is in a lot of stuff. The package doesn’t have to say Splenda to have sucralose in it. You have to read labels. So, you might still be using it and don’t even know it!

Sucralose is poison. It ruined five years of my life. I had a laundry list of medical problems while taking it, including overwhelming anxiety, depression, mood swings, insomnia and more.

Go ahead, google: anxiety splenda or anxiety sucralose or insomnia splenda or insomnia sucralose

The slogan, “Made from sugar…” is very misleading. Splenda might be made from sugar, but it is far from sugar. The resulting chemical is an organochloride (chlorocarbon). Organochlorides are typically poisons.

carbon monoxide – made from oxygen so its like a breath of fresh air

Q: Are bioplus energy drinks terrible for you – even in moderation?
They definitely do provide energy but i’m worried about the caffeine’s effects on my heart and health.
I was thinking of drinking no more than one a day to study for upcoming exams. I mean, it’s better than ritalin and adderall – which are abused by many students.

And while we’re on the subject, what about these kinds of energy drinks before exercise to keep me going? or maybe coffee?

I’m generally a healthy person and want to stay that way – so any opinions are welcome.

What do you think?

A: Yes, caffeine is a drug and it does not provide energy, it takes energy to metabolize it so the net effect is a downer. I do not consume caffeine in any form but one very cold day at work that’s all there was in the machine so I had a cup. I copped a buzz, the next day I noticed a state very similar to a hang over, so just to see what happened I had another cup of coffee. Copped a buzz, woke up and felt normal. next day same pattern. At this point I though why bother with the coffee when a good nights sleep is free and I do not have to put up with the hang over/downer every morning. I have use/experimented with a wide range of drugs (when I was young), so I can make this comparison two fast cups of coffee provide the same buzz as LSD or eating magic mushrooms. You are being lied to so some corporation can make a huge profit pedaling dangerous drugs legally.

Q: Is it normal to have a very fast heartrate?
Lately my heart has been racing a lot. like even if I haven’t been exercising my heart rate is incredibly fast and I’m worried about it. I take medication called ritalin. Might that have something to do with it? Should I go see a doctor? I haven’t been having chest pains or anything, its just that my heart races and my hands are shaky.

A: Ritalin commonly causes this side effect. You need to mention this to your GP ASAP.

Q: Why do I feel exhausted after taking adderall or ritalin?
I’m a 29 year old female, and I’ve been taking adderall (now ritalin) for about 5 months now for adult ADD (not ADHD). We started with Adderall XR, then moved to Adderall IR, then Ritalin IR. At the beginning, I thought it helped me focus a lot. Now, not so much. In fact, I feel mostly exhausted and horrible all the time. I’ve also lost quite a lot of weight (through healthy dieting – not starvation) in the few months. I just feel that I should be feeling healthy and energized and not fatigued. (I’m still overweight, but in a much healthier weight range than I was.)
We’ve tried out several different configurations of the medication, doses, etc. I think that switching back and forth between different doses and between XR and IR has been the worst part of it for myself, but I just think it isn’t helping anything, and only making me feel worse.
I’m very worried that my appetite will go out of control and I’ll be even more exhausted than I am right now, but I just feel like I need to get off this stuff and get healthy.
Has anyone ever experienced something like this, or can anyone offer any advice? I’ve had bloodwork recently to check for any lacking vitamins, and I seem to be okay. (besides an iron count of 40. I guess the range is 15 to 150, so its sort of low, but thats it.)
I want to start exercising, but the fatigue is so bad I can barely function. When I tell my doctor(s) that I’m tired all the time, they seem to just want to prescribe anti-depressants. But I’m not depressed and I just want to feel healthy on my own. I’m sick of messing with my poor brain chemicals.
Any advice for stopping the Ritalin? Its 20mg also, IR at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
Thanks for the answers – Just to clarify, I do not need an anti-depressant, and I’m looking for advice on stopping adult add medication. Thank you!

A: at your age i wouldn’t be taking that. someone should have shown you how to function without the drugs after you got out of school. it’s not like your not aware of what your doing. you can do an anti depressant for that instead. try something like lexapro and see if that helps you more. i understand that your trying to stop the add meds. however, sometimes we need something different. my daughter is on lexapro for anxiety and ocd. i use it for depression. it was just a different option, that’s all. good luck

Q: Are drugs the best answer?
We tell our kids that drugs are bad, but then give them some robutussin at the first sign of a cough.

Why do so many of us have an Tylenol deficiency?

Our kids can’t behave so we give them Ritalin.

What is it that a drug can cure that Nutrition and Exercise can’t prevent? is it that drugs have become our “fast food” to “health”?
Are we really living longer with medications?

Accidental death from prescription drugs, even when they are correctly given, is now the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S

Where was cancer 50 years ago before fast food? What drug do you take to prevent cancer? Yet I can find many nutritional supplements effective in preventing cancer.

How is it many societies that don’t have modern medicine have a far greater life expectancy?

What would happen to pharmaceutical companies if doctors prescribed only after they try treating and preventing nutritionally first?

Of course some conditions require drugs due to bad luck in genetics or environment.

But of the three leading causes of death and prescriptions, all three can be prevented in most cases with diet and exercise. (heart disease, cancer, and stroke)

If medicine is “health” care, then why do they only treat “sick” people instead of trying to keep people healthy?

A: Sometimes drugs are the answer that can give the patient the benefit they need in the amount of time they have, and sometimes the benefits of the medication outweight the risks or other side affects…. How else would a heart transplant patient be able to stop their body from attacking the heart in not for medications?

I agree with you though, drugs now in days are an easy out for Doctors to give and patients to take to “help” them.

If we (as people, or as a nation for that matter) spent as much time looking into preventative methods, or maintaing health by healthy living, as much as we put into medications, and looking up side affects, going to the DR’s to get them, etc, we would be a whole lot better off.

Q: diagnosed with ADHD 1 year ago?
I was diagnosed with ADHD 1 year ago ( I’ve always had but it became unmanagable after a car wreck in 1997 where I received a skull fracture). My wife made be go to a dr. they but me on Adderall IR and titrated doses, I apparently metabolize meds quickly, so he swithched me to Adderal XR and have had repeated dose adjustments (lower and higher ect). Now I am getting into problems again with my inabiltity to sit down, and control my mouth. I was going to ask him to try Ritalin LA or that Daytrana patch thing. I exercise 1.5 hours a day get exactly 7.5 hours of sleep, and eat low fat foods. I follow all food restrictions of the ADHD diet. I was put on Vyvance temporarily- it actually made me hyper (even more hyper than normal) and was DC’d. He has currently maxed out my Adderall XR at 60 mg in 4/ 15 mg doses every 6 hours. At first I had no more vivid dreams, no more excessive talking, no more bad temper and irritability, and I even quit grinding my teeth at night. Now it’s all coming back! Oh yeah, I have an atypical response to stimulants- they actually lower my Heartrate and blood pressure. I myself would rather not take anything, evryone else says they will not be around me if I don’t take it.

Anyway, would someone tell me if the Daytrana patch would be better, or suggest something else. I promise, I am actually take the med and no longer flushing it down the toilet.
you hateful witch. I am looking for a knowledge base- obviously you lack one. My wife died 8 months ago on May 3 rd 2007. If you had the ability to comprehend context, your ignorant self would have realized that I made no mention of the present state of my wife’s status. Thank Mama’s asshole for reminding me of the most painful time of my life. You F**King piece of S**T. Get an education.
to Nikki, thank you for the answer, I will talk to my dr about Concerta. Also, thank you for the defense about my wife, I don’t like to be reminded of it, she died 8 mos ago. Thank you very much Nikki.

A: Instead of Ritalin/Generic Methlyin, how about Concerta? Not sure about this, but I have heard good things about Concerta. My son is taking Methlyin for ADHD and I didn’t realize it was Ritalin. It’s hard to have him stop taking it because it’s been a year now, but if I would have know it was Ritalin, no way! I was really upset, but the medication is working great for him.

EDIT: Hey Mama, maybe you should read his question again, he said he was diagnosed a year ago and his other one was his wife died 5 months ago, which means she still would of been living! Pay attention to people’s questions and read them!
EDIT: Madison’s Friend, thanks for opening my eyes. I didn’t realize there were so many names for Ritalin.
