Q: Dust Mites?
Does Lysol Spray kill dust mites? I sprayed it in my dryer filter canister. I was cleaning the dust filter and 30 minutes later I got a ton of “mosquito” like bites. So I sprayed Lysol. What do you think? Help…

A: not sure if they kill dust mites, but dust mites don’t bite. people are allergic to dead dust mite particles and dust mite feces when inhalled. Also, if there were dust mites in the dryer, running the dryer should have killed them. I am severly allergic to dust mites and all bedding should be washed in hot water and dryed in the dryer.

Q: How to remove dust mites from my bedroom?
I am allergic to dust mites, and every morning i wake up to sneezing, so i want to know how to properely remove dust mites, from mattress, carpet and stuff.

A: Vacuum the mattress and wash the pillows, then put allergy covers on them. Wash the linens in hot water weekly. Use all cotton, washable quilts or comforters, wash as least once a month (you can toss them in the dryer weekly to remove dust), no chenille or anything fuzzy. Pull up that carpet and put down tile or laminate flooring. Keeping the room cooler than 70F cuts down on the mites too. Keep any pets out of the room. Dust the room regularly, depending on how fast it gets dusty it can be daily to weekly.

Q: Can dust mites live and reproduce in interlocking foam mats?
My baby is allergic to dust mites. I’m considering to buy interlocking foam mats (like exercise mat) to cover the hardwood flooring for cushioning. I’m wondering if dust mites can live and reproduce in these mats? Please advise. Thank you.

A: No, they generally do not live in foam. They like down the most so down is a big no no. But you should be fine with foam.

Nothing on the planet is going to be 100% mite free. At this very moment you have tiny mites crawling all over you and all over your home. You can’t totally avoid them but having wood floors and foam mats will surely help!

Q: How do you get rid of dust mites from a stuffed animal?
Anyone know how to remove dust mites from a stuffed animal, will putting it in the wash remove them?

A: Yes, washing it will remove it. Put it on a small load on gentle. Don’t put it in the dryer. Wring the water out of it and let it sit until dry. Put it outside in the sunlight maybe.

Q: How can I get rid of dust mites in my bedroom?
I’m allergic to dust mites, and I find that my symptoms get a lot worse when I’m in my bedroom. I feel the worst right when I get up in the morning after sleeping there all night.

How can I reduce the number of dust mites in my room? It has carpet, and I can’t get rid of it. But what else can I do?

A: Wash your bed linens in HOT water once a week if possible. If you have stuffed animals, put them in the freezer for 3 days in plastic bags. Steam your carpets often, lower humidity and temperature below 70. there are sprays and bedding covers you can buy for dust mites. Eucalyptus plants help too, get rid of useless things that collect dust/ Get an air filter that uses HEPA filters. Seriously, those things work magic!!! Clean, clean, clean

Q: What is the most effective way to eliminate dust mites at home?
Are dust mites spray effective and safe to use?

A: My son has an allergy to dust mites so I have researched this topic tremendously. It is impossible in a non hospital setting to eliminate them. You can try and decrease them in the bedroom. Get rid of carpet and use tile, linoleum or wood floors that you mop regularly. Use pillow and mattress encasings (covers that totally zip shut). Wash your sheets and bedding in hot water as often as you possibly can. They say not to use stuffed animals which is too drastic for a little kid so just throw them in the dryer every couple of days. Never re-use pajamas, use a fresh set every night. For furniture get leather or faux leather and not fabric. Use a damp cloth or baby wipes to wipe down dressers etc to remove dust. In the bedroom don’t use shelves or display a lot of dust collecting items out in the open. Even if the sprays did work you probably don’t want to be spraying your bedding down nightly and then inhaling the chemicals all night.

Q: How often should I clean my bedding in order to reduce dust mites and keep my bedding colorful and clean?
i just got a new matress and all new bedding, I’m not allergic to anything, but i think dust mites are gross and i want to keep them to a minimum. my bedding is red and black and i used to keep my bed really dirty and literally never cleaned it. How often should i clean it to avoid dust mites and dirt but still keep it colorful?

A: wash once a week – as long as you didn’t go to sleep sweaty ; ) i wuld rotate and vacuum your mattress twice a year – i choose before Christmas and Easter. when it comes to the washing use either an all fabric bleach OR Borax (my favorite) AND toss about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of inxpensive white vineager in the wash cycle — it helps hold in the color and is a natural disenfectant! no your stuff won’t smell from it – don’t worry : ) oh also, when you do the mattress flip – wash your mattress pad too!

Q: How to clean my mattress and eliminate dust mites more?
I have some bed mattresses that are kinda dusty. And was wondering what would be some good ways to clean them without getting it done professionally. I would like to reduce the risk of having problems with dust mites. I know you can’t completely get rid of them. However I would like to eliminate lots more dust and dust mites on my bed. Thanks.. P.S: I can’t afford a new bed

A: Vacuum it once a month really thoroughly. Sprinkle baking soda on it beforehand and lightly Febreeze it afterwards (wait till it’s 100% dry before putting sheets on). Keep windows open often.

Q: Is it possible for Dust Mites to cause a penile discharge?
I know havign dust mites in itself can’t cause your reproduction system to go array but having an allergy can. So is my question way off base or is there a possibility of it happening?

A: I seriously doubt that dust mite allergies could cause a penile discharge. Of course there is always a chance, but it seems very remote that it could be the cause of such. I’d think it would be more likely from either a bladder or prostate infection, or even an urethral infection, than from an allergy.

Q: How do you get rid of dust mites?
I have hard wood floors and it seems like there is always dust. I have a child and I am so worried there are dust mites. What is a good way to prevent them? I have become so paranoid lately about everything being clean, because she plays on her mat on the floor.

A: Stop with the worry! Dust mites have been around a lot longer than humans! And they have not killed anyone yet. They eat dead skin that falls from bodies into dust..they do not bite you or children. Keeping a house too clean is as bad as too dirty! We are raising a nation of children with rising asthma rates, mainly due to too clean and sterile a surrounding! Relax and enjoy life.. Dust mites are harmless, are everywhere, and let your child be a child. Put away the Chlorox counter sprays, the bathroom sanitizers, etc. We were not meant to live in sterile surroundings, and if we do not get used to microbs, etc. as we grow up, we could have a very real problem.

Q: How long can dust mites live?
I had a dust mite problem in my old apartment and moved about 1 month later into a new place. Is it possible that any dust mites could have transferred to my new bed?

A: the answer to your questions can be found in the link below.

Q: Did you know you are sleeping with Dust Mites and their fecal matter?
Just about every mattress has about 2,000,000 dust mites as well as their fecal matter. Did you know this?

A: Yes, and No, I don’t sleep with dust mites/fecal matter because….. I don’t make my bed until the afternoon ! Dust mites LOVE a freshly slept in bed made first thing in the morning.. INSTEAD I strip the bed and let it air out.. I usually leave my ceiling fan on and give the mattress a good spritz of febreze OR lysol disentfectant spray.. Let it dry and afew hours later make the bed.. I also sleep with a mattress cover that’s machine washable that’s a barrier between me/mattress.. I wash it once a week when I change my bedding… Every six months I flip/turn my mattress and sprinkle it with baking soda and use my shop vac to throughly clean both sides…. If you are really really concerned about dust mites there are mattress covers that go around the whole mattress to “seal” it from dust mites… It’s also good to replace your mattress every ten yrs or so…. good luck

Q: I love down pillows but not the dust mites they can produce?
I have to buy new pillows and I was told that my pillows are causing my allergies to act up. Is there an alternative that I can get a really down feeling pillow without the dust mites?

A: Feathers don’t cause dust mites. You may have problems with the dust caused by broken feathers. We place our feather pillows in a zippered cloth bag made for feather pillows. This goes into a pillow sham.

Q: Is there a chemical I can use to get rid of dust mites on my bed?
I change my linen once a week but I still have dust mites. How can I get rid of them? Can they be eliminated permanently? How do they get in the mattress?

A: No chemicals but, Start with your bed and pillows. First, start by dusting them until you’re satisfied. Then, proceed to vacuum the mattress and pillows. Your vacuum cleaner should have a HEPA filter. Otherwise, you will be just spreading dust mites further.

If you haven’t cleaned your bed or washed your pillows for a long time now, then you may want to consider washing everything. You may want to leave your mattress outside under direct sunlight for several hours. Direct sunlight is deadly to these pests. You may want to wash your pillows with hot water to kill every dust mite in them, since they cannot endure high temperatures.

Q: Cleaning tips for dust mites?
Does anyone have any tips on getting rid of dust mites (or at least preventing them from causing allergies)? I have dust mite covers on my mattress, box spring and pillows. What vacuum cleaners work best? I’ve been considering a Dyson Animal (because I have cats). Your thoughts?

Thanks!

A: I too have very severe asthma and allergies. I don’t think you can completely get rid of them. You’ve done the basic things we have to do (covers on bedding). I just bought a new vacuum cleaner, and wound up with a Kenmore model# 35922 (or 35923, just a 5′ longer cord) that was ranked #1 (over Dyson) by Consumer Reports.org. This thing even tells you how dirty your floor is with colored LED lights…(the first time I used it, the lights were red…lol). It also lets you know when the bag is full, and it has a HEPA bag. I got it on sale last week for $250. We paid an extra $25 or so for a 2 yr service plan.

There are also air purifiers. The Whirlpool Whispure AP 510 is supposedly one of the best (again according to Consumer Reports). I saw it on sale at the NationalAllergySupply.com for $229 (it’s normally about $299).

Aside from that, you just have to vacuum and dust AT LEAST once per week. Unfortunately, if you are finding that your allergies are REALLY bad, it’s probably your kitties, and nothing in the world will help you improve until you get rid of them. They do make special shampoo to reduce cat dander (which is what people are allergic to). I’m linking to a shampoo you can use. I love cats, too, but they make me too sick. :-(
