Q: How do steroids relieve sinus symptoms?
After a really bad head and chest infection 2 years ago (for which antibiotics weren’t prescribed for several weeks) I have had completely blocked sinuses. I’ve had scans which show I’m supposed to have a deviated septum. I have been prescribed Dexemethsone and I’ve been taking them for 5 days and the relief has been remarkable. How do they work?

A: Your sinuses react to infection with inflammation. The nasal passages can swell completely shut, so reducing the inflammation does make a big difference. If you also have a deviated septum, then you already have reduced airflow and perhaps some inflammation related to it. I’m sure having the inflammation stopped would be significant.

Q: Is it possible to have a sinus-related headache if I do not have any other symptoms of a sinus infection?
Just wondering if this is possible. I definitely have pressure in my head that feels like sinus pressure, but I don’t have any other symptoms like nasal discharge or anything like that. If so, are there any good ways to help ease the pain/pressure without taking medicine?

A: Yes. Impacted sinus infection can be well up there and not dripping and hurts above the eyes and eyebrows. Sometimes across the forehead. But this type is rarer than a normal sinus infection. Have you had a cold or virus in the last week or two? Fever? Earache? These can also cause sinus pain. Also, you can get this pain after flying and having inner ear infections and it ends up in your sinuses and ears. Water in the canals from ears from swimming can bring on a sinus infection.

So there are many causes. Another is straining from the eyes, can hurt not only above the eyes and eyebrows, but behind the eyes as well. This comes with being on computer too long and not blinking enough.

If you still have this pain and it gets overwhelming, see your doctor.

Q: Is it possible to have a sinus infection without having symptoms of a runny nose?
My little boy keeps getting these bad headaches and the doctor said after a ct scan that there was “a little” something going on in the sinus area and he was treated with antibiotics, and was headache free for 2 weeks and now it is back. He has no other symptoms other than the headache. I thought sinus infections would at least have a runny nose with it, or being stuffy.

A: Yes, hay fever/sinusitis/allergies could be causing it. Some people sneeze, some people have runny noses… while others get headaches or nausea. I have a real bad time with motion sickness when my sinuses are infected. Even when they’re just irritated, before they become infected, I still feel sick and have a headache!

Maybe take him to see a Naturopath or allergies specialist. You don’t wanna keep putting him on antibiotics for allergies… you need to find the root of the issue. His immune system is overactive… there are many natural things that can help that such as nutrition/diet recommendations, herbal supplements and so forth. Goodluck!

Q: Is it possible to have a sinus infection without having ANY symptoms ?
Is it possible to have a sinus infection without ANY symptoms such as runny or stuffy nose fever mucus or anything that says YOU’RE SICK??? I only have the symptom of pressure and pain in the right side of my mouth around my gums and just like if i had a a sinus infection???is this possible???? HELP IM IN PAIN!!

A: ever thought it may be a tooth ache or if you still have your wisdom teeth they could be shifting, also the pressure just may be the first symptom but my be not be the last…i have chronic sinus problems

Q: Why do I get a headache and sinus symptoms with approaching rainy, cold weather?
With lots of pain in the eyes.

A: When a front moves through your srea is changes the air pressure (the concept that is expressed by reading a barometer). You may just be hypersensitive to pressure changes. Does the same thing happen when you fly or anything like that? It might now due to the fact that they are severe pressure changes but usually people who get headaches with weather changes are hypersensitive to slight pressure changes.

Or you might be able to predict the future…. lol. Just kidding

Q: Are the following symptoms indicative of a sinus infection?
My symptoms are:

Excessive saliva in the mouth, constant swallowing, tightness in the throat as a result of always swallowing, burping more often as a result of swallowing saliva, post-nasal drip.

Also, I’ve noticed a crackling sound in my ears, and they make a popping noise when I blow my nose hard enough.

Is this a sinus infection? How can it be cured?
Thanks for the answer. But it doesn’t explain the post-nasal drip that I’ve been having.

A: This is not a sinus infection at all.

Many people, including myself, ears crack or pop when the nose is blown.

As for the excessive burping, swallowing, can be due to slight reflux and/or indigestion.

If it bothers or worries you a great deal, you need to make an appointment to see your Doctor.
It’s easily fixed with dietary changes and meds.

Q: Is it true that grape seed extract, when taken, will cure sinus symptoms?
Can those with medical knowledge help me out with this? I have a pertubring sinus problem i.e. itchy eyes, blocked nose, feeling groggy everyday. Thanks!

A: Don’t waste your money on it. Try nasal irrigation to flush your sinus cavities out. That will do it. Nurse Kindheart

Q: Why are my ears still popping? I had a sinus infection, and my other symptoms are gone.?
I had a sinus infection, but the other symptoms disappeared a few days ago. My ears still pop every time I swallow or yawn. Sometimes it is just one, and sometimes it is both. I already took amoxicillin for the sinus infection.

A: i get that sometimes what i do is just wait it out witch kinda sucks but it will go away in a couple days if not ask someone like a doctor if it is still bothering u

Q: What symptoms have you had from a sinus infection?
I am having a lot of pressure behind my nose and around my eye. I also have felt some pressure on my upper back jaw. It really frightens but I am told this is a sinus infrection. I do not have a runny nose but I do feel the occasionaly nasal drip. Has anyone had similar symptoms?

A: yes, I have had similar. The nose may not be runny b/c the sinuses are not draining. other symptoms I have had include yellowish or greenish mucus (gross, I know, but very common with these). Horrible headaches. And like you said, intense pressure.
Hope you feel better soon. They can cause you to fill weak and/or dizzy, to be very tired…and they can take a long time to get rid of!
Drink plenty of fluids. Take your antibiotics until they are finished. Take it easy.

Q: Is there any possible natural cure or alleviation for sinus infection symptoms?

A: For sure would be my short answer but before you look for the cure you first need to recognize what the most common sinus infection symptoms are. For example did you know that seeing double (not after drinking) can be a sinus infection symptom. So my advice would be the following. First find out if you really have sinusitis or maybe just some kind of allergy.Obviously if you have an allergy then treating for sinusitis will not work. Then when you have established that you actually do have sinus infection symptoms then find the right treatment. Q: What are the symptoms of a sinus infection?
I just wanted to kno the symptoms because im coming down with something….
My nose is constantly running, and then it becomes stuffy again, and i have a bad headache that feels like my head is going to explode..

A: The usual symptoms are headache, facial tenderness, and as few as 25% of patients with acute sinusitis have fever associated with it. Sore throat, coughing, and a cloudy, greenish or yellowish nasal discharge are few common signs of Sinusitis.

Some additional signs that the doctor will check for in order to diagnose sinusitis are swollen areas around the eyes, nasal passages that have become reddened, facial areas over the sinuses that are tender to percussion (tapping) and drainage from the nose that is similar to pus. Sometimes additional information is used to diagnose this information, such as patient history, and certain tests such as a CT scan or MRI might also be performed because these tests are far better at revealing the actual infection than an X-Ray.

Q: How to lessen symptoms of a sinus infection?
At the moment, my nose feels hot and throbbing, I can’t breathe out of my left nostril. My throat is sore and my head is pounding. I have school tomorrow, and two of the lessons will be awful if I can’t make these symptoms a bit less awful. And how long will this last?
Please don’t suggest a salt/saline solution, as that’s not an option sorry.
Thanks :)

A: Tea Tree Oil, Kiddo. It will fix you right up. Put a mug of water in the microwave until boiling. Get some Tea Tree Oil and, while having your face over the steaming mug, drop a few drops of the oil in the water and breathe in those first vapors that come up off the water (those are the most potent and healing). You can get Tea Tree Oil at a GNC, Walmart or a health food store. Believe me, it works!

Hope you’re better soon.

Q: Can symptoms of a sinus infection be sharp pains in head that come and go, and ear pain?
What else can be symptoms too? Like fever or what?

A: Those are both symptoms. Congestion, swollen noses, swollen lymph nodes, severe headaches, ear pain, disorientation, dry eyes, pounding heads, post nasal drip, and bloody noses (after nasal spray usage, which is why I’m including them) are all common side-effects of sinus infections. Lie down, take some Afrin (with a doctor’s permission only!), use a neti pot or sinus rinse, some Motrin, and any other meds you may want to use. Relax, watch TV, close your eyes, sleep a little, and take a long, hot, bath.
