Q: Asthmatics: is this common?
Is it common for asthmatics to frequently lose their voice / sound winded, as if you have laryngitis?
This has been happening to me SOOO much in the past few months and I was wondering if it’s common. It happens when my chest is getting tight, or after my asthma has been acting up.
I’m getting very frustrated… does anyone else have this problem? It’s never going away!
A: i get that sometimes. like my voice will change and usualy its because of the flem in the back of your throat. nothing to worry about.
Q: 9 month old…hoarse?
Over the last couple of weeks, my 9 month old daughter’s voice has become rather hoarse. It’s not too noticeable until she cries, then it sounds as if she has a bad case of laryngitis. I took her in for her 9 month checkup today, during which the doctor asked if she had been wheezing at all. I told him no, and he seemed to be hinting at the fact that she might have asthma. But since she isn’t wheezing, he isn’t too concerned. Do you think it might just be a temporary thing? Anyone else have a similar experience?
Thanks for your input.
A: Ask the doctor to run a test for bronchitis, my 12 month old is really hoarse when he cries, but when he talks you can hear him louder.
Q: SymbiCort- feeling very jittery, tachycardia, and just BAD….have you ever felt this and is it normal?
I just started taking SymbiCort last week, 2 puffs a day, twice a day with no problems, except for some hoarseness in my voice which felt like Laryngitis.
Today I got my puffer out of the car and took 3 puffs because my asthma has felt bad…..
Shortly after I start to feel very jittery, like i’m on a caffeine high but more unpleasant……My heart is not at it’s regular speed which is 60-70bpm, it’s RACING….150bpm.
I’m worried, but my mom says to just relax and ride it out, it will wear off……….
What should I do…..and more importantly have you been on this medication before and felt the same symptoms as what I am experiencing right now……..’
I would really appreciate your comments because this is my health and I’m not sure if what I am feeling is normal..or if it will just pass……
Thanks!
Thanks for your info, I hope it passes.
The doctor actually told me it’s used as Rescue and maintenance inhaler……….I know on the American website it says it’s not for rescue. But I live in Canada and I’m taking a much higher dose than they offer in the American brands. I think it’s like 200mg formoterol and 6ug of Budesonide….So it can be used as a rescue inhaler…….Or at least thats what he said….
Maybe he’s wrong I dunno……….
Thanks for your information!!! Much appreciated. I can’t wait until this effect has worn off it’s driving me crazy and very hard on my heart….
A: You can call your doctor and ask him to be sure, but I think the symptoms will wear off in an hour or two. As for the Symbicort, you don’t sound like anyone’s told you how it’s to be used. First, it’s not a rescue inhaler. It does not work like the albuterol you should have for sudden attacks. Use your albuterol (Ventolin, etc.) every 4 hours as needed for attacks. When you do use your Symbicort twice daily, be sure to shake it for at least 5 seconds minimum to mix the 2 ingredients it has. Also, be sure to rinse your mouth and spit out the water afterward. Do not swallow it. The steroid it contains is not meant to be consumed orally, it could cause stomach problems.
Try to calm down, use the albuterol if you’re still short of breath, and use the Symbicort and any other maintenance meds you have as they are directed — that’s why they have instructions.
Q: Phlegm with some spots of blood?
I started out about a week ago with a sore throat which led to thick phlegm in my throat. I then started losing my voice and thought I might have laryngitis but then my sore throat started getting better and a deeper cough has developed. I started using a humidifier at night to try and get the phlegm up out of my throat but I’m only getting a little bit up in the mornings. The phlegm has thick yellow chunks and a few small spots of red as well from deep in my throat. My chest is starting to feel tight when I breathe deep but it doesn’t hurt when I cough or anything..just a tickle in back of throat from phlegm rising. I don’t have a fever but have been getting headaches as well. Where did this come from? No sinus problems, no allergies or asthma, no cold or flu lately, and don’t smoke, etc,….what is this and should I be worried? Will it go away on it’s own???
Just checked temp and it is 99.1 f.
A: From the symptoms that you gave, you might have Whooping Cough. Call your doctor, set up an appointment, and make sure to tell him about the blood in your phlegm. Whooping Cough is a minor disease, but can turn serious. Lots of little kids get it, and some adults too.
Q: What’s wrong with me (illness)?
I have been sick for over a week. I wrote down this through description of symptoms. Please, please, please…take the time to review this and give me your opinion of what might be wrong with me.
History:
Flu Shots- both flu and swine flu vaccines this year.
All other shots- yes.
Been outside the country- no.
Asthma.
Age 20, male.
Thursday:
I had some contact with a “sick” person in the computer lab. I was drenched during a cold downpour and walked around with wet clothes an air-conditioned building for an hour.
Friday:
I went swimming at 6PM in a cold swimming pool.
I developed a canker sore, although mine are usually triggered by excess stress and spicy foods.
I had no symptoms, with the exception of a very mild sore throat and a runny nose. Since I was vacationing in the Alleghany Mountains (and I live in a hot suburb outside of Washington, DC), I thought maybe it something to do with the change in the climate.
Saturday:
My sore throat got a little bit worse, but not bad enough that I would think that I was sick. I was scheduled to go white water rafting (the temperature was 78, the water temperature was 60). I went swimming with a shirt at 5:30PM and experienced a bit of a chill. Had I known I was sick, I would have not done this, but once again I didn’t feel sick, I just thought my throat was dry.
Sunday:
I woke up and found I had mild laryngitis. My high tenor dropped to a bass overnight, which is odd for a twenty-year-old. At this point, I thought something was wrong. But it went away two hours after I woke up and I thought nothing more of it.
I did feel a little weak and my throat was still sore.
Monday:
I returned home. The same thing happened with my voice yet again, only this time my throat was much more sore. I had been producing phlegm, I didn’t have much of an appetite, I felt fatigued, I was congested, and would sneeze.
I went to physical therapy (I have an injured knee from a car accident). During one exercise where weights were placed on my hip and knee, I had a terrible coughing spell because the weight made it impossible to flex my hip. I kicked the table and the therapist took the weight off. The coughing fit nearly made me vomit. During driving, my reaction time was way off and I almost got into an accident—twice. I couldn’t decide whether I wanted the air conditioning on or not.
Tuesday:
My throat felt better. My voice was back to normal when I woke up. I did feel exhausted and congested. I had a production meeting for a play that I had to attend and by the end of the session, I found I was losing my voice. I had body aches and was so tired, I ran into a curb, causing a flat tire. Later, my dad drove me to the repair shop. In the car, I had a terrible coughing fit and overwhelming exhaustion. I had no appetite and went to bed at eight (usually I go to bed at one). I would wake up every half hour and have trouble going to bed. My lymph nodes were swollen, my head would hurt, and I would have to dab my body with a wet toilet to cool it down (I didn’t have a fever, but it felt like I did).
Wednesday:
I wasn’t able to go out, with the exception of the doctor. She prescribed antibiotics and figured I had bronchitis, although she said she was not sure. My symptoms and their severity were pretty much the same as they were Tuesday.
Thursday:
I felt a little bit better, but still pretty cruddy. My cough became worse, however, and my ribs and back would hurt.
Friday:
Early Friday morning, I developed a fever of 102.6…then I took Advil and a lukewarm bath. My temperature eventually dropped to 99.2, before later spiking to 101.4. I had no appetite, I was nauseous, my cough felt rusty and full of phlegm, and I was tired and sleepy, and found it hard to get out of bed.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please let me know what you think might be wrong with me based on these symptoms: flu, bronchitis, pneumonia, combination of the two, etc.? I will not hold you responsible for my diagnosis, I am just trying to decide what’s wrong with me, because I don’t want to go back to the doctor or to the ER. If I do get worse or continue to not respond to antibiotics, I will, though.
A: You have given a very good description of your problems which are very clear and easy to read; however this should not be on Yahoo Answers. This should be shown to your doctor.
What you have to be sounds like glandular fever (though the anti-biotics may have led to gland swelling).
You should speak to a doctor ASAP. Antibiotics do not always work and the illness can be resistant them.
If you feel dizzy, become breathless of faint, or get a temperature higher than about 102.5; you need to go to the ER.
You should not leave this problem any longer, it does sound very serious. Also I would tell the doctor about working a lab.
Q: ok i need help…?
ok when i was a baby i had asthma but it when away whenever i turned 2
like last week i started to choke up and i couldnt breathe at all i was gasping for air.
now every time i breath it really hurts my through i feel really fine i dont have the flu or a cold its just my throught i just wanna know what it can possibly be that is causing this.
Oh and i had laryngitis a while back my voice just left i guess because i use it to much *i do a lot of singing* and i also wonder if that can be the cause of this problem
A: its possible that asthma will reoccur again after a few years.
example: I was about 8 years old when I had my first asthma problem
now that I 30 years old my asthma has returned.
I started to cough & wheeze for a few months before being diagnosed.
Q: My doctor prescribed Asmanex Twisthaler for laryngitis..?
My doctor prescribed Asmanex Twisthaler for laryngitis..I was a little dismayed with this because the package insert said it was for asthma. I asked the pharmacist and he checked and couldn’t find any information for it to be used for laryngitis. Have you ever heard of this? I haven’t used it yet.
A: to be honest I have done so much searching on this question for you and cannot find any reason for this to be prescribed for laryngitis. And if the chemist isn’t sure either I suggest you ask the doctor directly. Its not the first time a Dr needs to be asked about the treatment and I would rather you set your mind at rest

I don’t smoke either.

A: coughing up blood, means there is blood in your lungs, thats never a great sign. however the blood may have been grabbed along the throat on the way up.
are you a smoker? around smoke ? if your a smoker, heavy smoker or not, think about this:
if the spots of blood become worse, i would recommend you head into a hospital, or make an appt, to rule out any strange bacterial, paracitic or cancer that may be to play.
