Q: Twitching Muscles!?
Lately, my muscles have just started twitching. It used to happen every now and then, but lately it’s happening ALL THE TIME. They’re constantly twitching, they stop, they start again! it’s really annoying. is there a reason for this? a treatment?
A: How’s your diet? Potassium deficiency can sometimes be the culprit as potassium plays an important role in muscle contraction and nerve transmission. When potassium is deficient in the diet, activity of both muscles and nerves can become compromised.
Cantaloupe, Spinach, tomato (uncooked), celery, broccoli, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, asparagus, papaya and more are high in potassium…as is Black Strap Molasses, (table spoon per day). See if eating more of these foods helps!
Q: Does the twitching muscles in my back and elbow mean they are injured?
I recently had a subluxation(partial dislocation) on my left shoulder. And ever since, there is twitching in my shoulder blade area on my back and twitching in elbows.
Is it a tendon, muscle, or nerve strain?
Btw please don’t say go to the doctor because I already have for x-rays.
Thank you in advance.
A: It is entirely possible. I know you told me not to but you could consult your physician (who took care of the injury) if you’re worried. It sounds to me as if they’re still healing. If the injury was less than 2 weeks ago don’t worry too much, just go easy on them, and make sure you’re getting enough calcium, potassium, and sodium. Muscle twitching is usually a miss-firing of nerve cells, probably due to an imbalance or lack of the ions that maintain the action potentials across cells.
good sources of calcium include: broccoli, spinach, milk
a good source of potassium are bananas
salt is in just about everything packaged.
try adding a banana to you breakfast and a spinach salad to lunch and see if that helps any.
Q: How can I stop my muscles from twitching?
I got my sleeve started yesterday and wanted to get 5 hours in, but my muscles started twitching after 3 1/2 hours and my artist said that was my body’s way of telling me “Im done” for the day. The pain was fine and I wanted to finish alot more but I couldnt control my muscles twitching.
Anyone experience this or have a quick fix? I know muscle relaxers thin your blood out, is there something else?
I dont think the artist needed a break, he is attempting the World Record for the longest tattoo session. His name is Wade Darby and did a parctice run of 50 straight hours. Its on You Tube, his shop is called “Visions in Flesh”
A: In a sea of dumb questions, this is a very good one.
As I understand it, this kind of reaction is fairly typical for longer endurance sessions. I forget if Rider had this with his 9 hour marathon. I know with my longest of ~4 hours I got a similar reaction.
I don’t think there is much you can do, to be honest, and certainly nothing pharmaceutical. I was able to stretch myself out to 4 hours – I started getting twitchy about 3 – with breaks, but that’s about it. I’m not sure if that’s the time the body usually runs out of endorphins, or even if that’s possible (I’m not an MD).
Anyhow, it’s likely you’ve just found your limit. I wonder if, like with exercise, you can’t train it up. One artist said long distance runners tend to be able to last longer. Not precisely the easiest option, but perhaps the only one.
Best of luck to you.
Addendum: One thing I forgot to mention… it’s also possible the artist just wanted a break. 5 hours is a bit of time to be inking someone, even if you’re easy to work with. S/he might have been attempting to be polite & wanting a break themselves. The motive to keep the customer happy & profit motive sometimes means you don’t say specifically what you need (ie, “My hand/back/whatever is killing me, I need to stop”).
Addendum 2: Ah, okay, sorry… didn’t mean to impugn the artist. I did chat with a nutritionist-type and they thought the potassium idea could be right on. Bananas or chocolate would indeed be a good solution if this is the case, so Wifeywifey, somebody & cait5156 probably got it right. I’d go for bananas, but that’s just me (I’m a weirdo who really doesn’t like chocolate).
Q: what causes twitching of the facial muscles?
Over the past week, I have had a couple occurances of my facial muscles twitching. It is a small area on the right side on the ’smile line’ between my nose and mouth. any ideas what could be causing that?
really? Thank you. I have been struggling with insomnia for several weeks.
btw, i am not looking for drug suggestions. I think a real doctor would find it irresponsible to be suggesting medication to someone over the internet.
A: I had a doctor tell me that it’s a sign of fatigue.
Q: What can cause twitching of facial muscles?
For the last 2 days the muscles of my face, particularly my right eyebrow muscle, twitches involuntarily every minute or so. If I contract the muscles when this happens it causes all the muscles in my forehead to twitch up and down involuntarily. The only thing that I can think of is that I’ve taken some Soma (muscle relaxers) within the last few days. Can that have anything to do with it?
A: First I would check on side affects on Soma.
Second I would call you doctor.
There are many things that can be associated with this.
I have a link below to help you.
Q: what the heck can cuase annooying muscle spasmz twitching muscles everythwere?
thourought the body it feels like little bugs are knockin on my muscles ahahhahaha but really what can cuase that?
A: I had really really bad back spasms one night. I think I aggravated my back by moving a chair. I twisted my back wrong. I felt a little pop/tear feeling in my back and it wasn’t too long before the spasms started. They were so bad I couldn’t lay down, couldn’t sit up, couldn’t sit, couldn’t stand. I looked like a duck waddling as I walked. Try and do some stretching exercises but don’t pull too hard cause you’ll aggravate it even worse.
Q: What is the twitching of my muscles?
OK so I am a highly competetive high school runner. I am currently training for xc. After I run my muscles usually twitch like crazy, usually at night like when i lay down to go to sleep. It is usually in my quads, maybe because those are the weakest muscles in my legs since i have tendonitis in my knees, and im still trying to strengthen them. Does anybody know what the twitching is?
A: Your quads are the strongest muscles in your leg. That is why people injure the hamstring group because if you get a cramp in them the quads will tear the hamstrings before you can stop the leg. Be careful that you get the correct ratio of strength front to back and side to side. An imbalance will lead to injury. If you are working on strengthening your quad, do a test to see the ratio, and keep the hamstrings in range. The quads will probably be stronger now. The twitching is a spasm from working hard. Try to cool down well, stretch easy, do not over stretch and drink plenty of water. If you have a chemical imbalance take some supplements, because you can not eat enough bananas to take care of the problem. If you are treating the tendinitis by warming up before and icing after training you may be able to control the problem.
Q: I started concerta but my leg muscles are twitching?
I started concerta on my 2nd day and have noticed my leg muscles are twitching/fasiculating.I have felt these twitches before but there more aggravated. Do you think it will fade with time?
A: Yea when I first took concerta the exact same thing happened to me don’t worry about it it’s a common side effect and for me concerta does make me have ticks and twitches but they didn’t completely fate but they did get less severe over time so it’s all good
Q: How do I stop my muscles from twitching?
I don’t know if anyone has experianced this but every so often a random muscle in my body will start twitching and I don’t know what it is or what causes it. Any thoughts?
A: Twitching muscles can be the result of a lot of things….from the simple to the bizzare…
Pick the one that seems most like you, and go with the suggestion…(oh…and if it happens just as you’re going to sleep, no worries, man. Everyone experiences muscle twitches as they sink into sleep – they just aren’t always aware of it. It has something to do with the neurotransmitters in the brain sending a message to the body to go into sleep mode.)
1) Potassium deficiency. Eat bannanas. No lie, this is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies.
2) Dehydration. Drink water. Come to think of it, you can take care of #1 and #2 by drinking propel fitness water or gatoraid.
3) Overuse of the muscle. Stretch more before you work out. Lower the weight or number of reps.
4) Underuse of the muscle. Get off your butt and start excercising.
5) Sleep deprivation/exhaustion. This is a no-brainer. Sleep more. Go to bed earlier, sleep a little later.
6) Stress. Learn to meditate. Do yoga. Figure out some way to relieve your stress in a positive and meaningful way.
6) Turretts syndrome (REALLY not likely). Various twitches and/or muscle jerks can be a symptom. If your worried about it, go to a psychiatrist. But I gotta tell you, the likelihood of this one is about 1 in 100,000. (Although I do have a nephew with a slight case of it.)
Pick one at a time, see if you can relieve the problem.
Good luck!
Q: What happens when one of you muscles starts twitching and sort of has a spasm?
I think it happens to everyone, just a muscle that at random (or what SEEMS to be random… it probably isn’t if there’s a cause) times starts twitching involuntarily. It doesn’t hurt or anything, I just want to know what causes it.
A: I happens to everyone (I think).
Generally you can track it back to over-working that muscle in days past. Carrying heavy books for long time, or yard work. Muscles repair themselves after hard work and that can sometime cause slight non-painful twitches. You might find that regular [semi-daily] stretching and exercise would reduce the occurrence.
Another situation is hard work and low electrolytes. I personally find that low potassium causes me painful leg cramps; but eating a banana cures it within hours.
If it randomly and regularly occurs; ask a doctor.
Q: Is there a remedy for twitching calf muscles after running?
The muscles continually spasm which makes relaxing or sleep impossible, this will continue for over 24 hours, it looks so weird that I even filmed the movement.
A: This is likely to be the result of a mineral imbalance. During excercise minerals can get out of balance esp potassium, magnesium and calcium. Bananas are packed with potassium, so a good place to start.
Q: What std virus causes muscles twitching about 1 month after recieving it?
A: Within a few weeks symptoms of HIV can cause muscle twitching in the hands and feet, along with fatigue, weight loss, shortness of breath and anemia, HIV/AIDS can cause muscle tremors throughout the body if the virus has infected the brain and central nervous system.
HIV may progress to AIDS within one year or not until 10-15 years later.
Full blown AIDS causes a low white blood cell count allowing other infections and cancer to occur.
Wondering why you say you are HIV positive if you haven’t received your test results back.
Q: Why does the different parts of my body muscles keep twitching or jumping?
It’s like when your eye twitches…but this is in my arm, my stomach, my wrist, ankle, but mostly my thigh…I’ve had those twitches before, but now they are getting frequent. THey dont hurt, but they are getting very annoying…ha even as I type i feel the twitching in my foot, and my butt.(LOL) annooyyyiiingggg
A: you are not getting enough sleep, are you?
Q: When your muscles are twitching what exactly is going on in there? Is it growing repairing etc….???
I’m a very active individual and get my muscles twitching often just wondering what specifically is going on in there.
A: Twitching, spasms and cramps are often caused by a magnesium deficiency.
Q: How come my thigh muscles are twitching so much?
It’s keeping me awake. Only one leg, actually. On the inside of the thigh. Started last night.
A: Been exercising loads lately? It could be due to a strain.
It might also be due to a lack of magnesiun. My friend had a similar thing but all it took was some magnesium pills or something.

Although I don’t think yours is as bad as that (Myoclonus).
If it continues, maybe you should see a doctor.
