Q: Small Bumps forming rough patches in mouth?
Since two weeks ago, a small rough patch, of what appeared to be little tiny bumps appeared on the inside of my upper lip. Ignoring it, i found that the patch had developed on the inside of my cheek. Now, only a few days ago, the patch moved down to the inside of my bottom lip. They are all present as tiny bumps that accumulate together to form what feel like rough lesions to the tongue when passing over them.

I do not smoke, have no history of cancer (oral etc), i am healthy and young.

What is it?

A: If it is white and patchy as well, sounds like thrush, eat yogurt, take acidopholis tabs (keep these refrigerated after opening) and if it doesn’t go away go to the doc for some anti fungal swish and swallow…sorry, I can’t remember the name of that stuff, but it starts with an N…could be hand foot and mouth disease too…that’s treated with antibiotics.

Q: Rough Patch in Mouth!?!?
So I have had this rough patch in my mouth on the inside of my cheek for a few weeks. I thought I had burnt myself on hot food or something but it isn’t going away. Has anyone ever had a rough patch in their mouth and what was it? There is no pain, it is the size of a dime, and a little red.

A: You really should see your doctor about it. It might be nothing or it might be oral cancer. Do you smoke or chew tobacco?
I would get it looked at if I were you. It’s not normal.

Q: Red, rough, dry patches in each corner on my mouth?
I have not changed my make up or skin care routine for at least 3 weeks. I cleanse and moisturise twice a day. The other day I found I had these bits in the corner of my mouth, and it looks like I’m frowning constantly. There a visible bits of dry skin coming off and feel rough.
Oh, I put extra moisturiser on when I saw the red patches, but it hasn’t done much. What do I treat them with?

A: apply a thin layer or aquaphor is good for the dry patches

Q: White patches in mouth?
I felt a rough patch of something on the inside of my cheek with my tongue. So I looked in the mirror with a flashlight and I noticed a white patch. I wanted to see if I had any more in my mouth so I looked all over the inside of my cheek. I have several scattered on the inside of my cheek in several different places. I brush my teeth and gums every day so it’s not that I have bad dental hygiene. So what are these white patches?
Yeah, I’ve been consuming a lot of sugar and no, I don’t use tobacco

A: Have you had a lot of sugar recently? They could be canker sores.

Alternately, it could be a sign of a viral infection.

Q: Rough patches on insides of cheeks?
Im 19. Im a hypochondriac & I suffer from a phobia of HIV, OCD and HIGH anxiety. Im a virgin, saving myself for marriage. I DONOT use IV drugs. My parents are completely healthy & my lifestyle is very contained. Im fearful that I have HIV because I openmouth kissed this guy & I have this opened flap of gums that has ALWAYS been open but doesnt bleed. What if somehow his blood got into that flap? It was a 2 second kiss & I didNOT taste any blood & oxygen WAS present in BOTH our mouths. I dunno if he has HIV or not

I have told you all of this because…I am scared to have HIV and I am scared that the rough patches inside of my mouth may be a symptom of that even though I don’t know exactly how I would have gotten HIV. Hahaha.

I am a little freaked out. Sorry. I have taken 5 HIV tests in the last year and ALL came back negative and I am going back tomorrow for another just so I can make sure.

Ugh…can someone ease my worry and tell me what these rough patches really are?

A: There is tons of different medication for you to take to control your OCD and anxiety. This is no way to live. You are totally overreacting. You can’t go through life like this. While you are getting another Aids test, ask the doc for somethin for anxiety. YOu can’t continue to analyze every kiss. Now having said that, it is great that you are being cautious and carfull and that you are saving yourself for marriage. That is wonderful. You should be very proud of yourself for that commitment. And as far as the rough patches, I don’t know. Did you eat to much salt ? or are you biting the inside of your cheeks?

Q: Dry, rough patches on my face; help!?
Lately I’ve finally gotten my acne under control, but these mysterious dry patches keep showing up. My skin is normal in my T-zone area and outer face, but I am getting dry patches near my mouth. I have tried exfoliating, moisturizing, and have religiously been applying Vaseline to these areas. Occasionally the patches dissapear, but they show up within 1-2 days. It is hard for me to put makeup on now (because it shows up.) I’ve had this for about 6 months now. Please help!

My skin care routine [at night]:
- Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser
- Clean and Clear Daily Scrub; Morning Burst
- (sometimes) Sheer Cover Conditioning Cleanser

- Neutrogena Pore Minimizing Toner
- Clean and Clear Astringent+ Spot treatment

- Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion
- Neutrogena Anti-wrinkle Cream (night)
- Vaseline
+ Topical Medication (sulfur?)

A: Is it eczema? A dermatologist could give a diagnosis.

If so, less is more when treating it, because your skin is extra sensitive to dyes, fragrances and chemicals.

Sometimes skin irritations like patches, rashes, etc… are an indication of an allergy or sensitivity to something. It could be a response to one of the products you’re using. Food and environmental allergies are a factor as well. Stress can also trigger skin reactions.

It helps to apply a moisturizer to your face while it’s wet. It absorbs better that way.

Q: if you have a bumpy patch in your mouth does it mean you have herpes?
A few weeks ago a girl took my drink and drunk out of it and now noticed i have a rough area in my mouth (not as smooth as the rest) do i have herps ive never had my first kiss yet either

A: That doesn’t always mean it’s herpes and your not likely to get herpes from sharing drinks because the virus doesn’t last in fluids or on objects for long periods of time. It could be some irritation or canker sores. You’re more likely to get oral herpes from kissing some one that has an active out break of cold sores, which are caused by oral herpes.

Q: Sore patches in my mouth?
I Have like, loads of sore patches in my mouth
Like on inparticular on my gum above the tooth to the left of the two front teeth ,
They hurt when pressure is applied and feel rougher than the other bits

Do you know what it could be?
I thought maybe it could just be im brushing to hard , so should I brush that bit a bit more gentler? or maybe harder to make it like… not infected no more?

Lol
Thanks !

A: Check out pemphigus.

Q: Sore patch on roof of mouth?
Okay, first of all, I’m 13 and never smoked or drunken or anything. I’m half white& half black. I’ve had this sore red patch on the roof of my mouth for months, maybe even a year, I don’t even remember when I first got it. It’s a little rough patch, made up of tiny red dots I guess&I was just wondering if it’s dangerous? It doesn’t hurt, except occasionally when it gets really dry and hurts, and I taste sorta a mucusy taste i guess. Oh, and right now I have a sore throat (even though the patch doesnt hurt) but that’s because there’s been a flu going around my school.

I just wanted to know if this is normal, b/c of poor dental care or something (I brush my teeth twice a day, a few hours after eating normally) or something more serious? I read in a magazine that dark skinned people dont get moles normally, but instead indentations can show up on your palms and in your mouth that might be a sign of sun damage or something more dangerous? (God forbid.) Just wanted to be on the safe side, so is this normal, or could it be something more serious? (Sorry for the repetition, I’m just worried.)

A: You should get checked by the dentist for the following :

1. Any viral infecton, and

2. To determine if you are a mouth-breather….can cause dehydration.

Q: White patch in mouth?
Im 19 years old have recently been noticing this white patch(es) in my mouth. I first noticed it a couple weeks ago because it felt rougher than the rest of my mouth. It is on the corner of my mouth in my cheek but also sort of on my inner lip. It has no pain or discomfort. I have sort of been biting at it because it feels weird and have been really stressed lately. Today there was a canker sore inside my lip. I don’t chew tobacco however i have been known to smoke the occasional cigar. I usually drink 2 days a week with an average of 5 to 10 drinks a night. What do I have?

A: Its probably just irritated if your worried go to your doctor or dentist. It may be an infection. If I were you I would smoke for a couple days and buy some Listerine and use that twice a day if things don’t look better in a couple days call the doctor!

Q: Anyone care for a joke?
A pirate drops anchor at an all too familiar port after a long summer out to sea. He strolls into his favorite bar and greets the bartender who is astounded to see the pirate decorated with a wooden leg, a shiny new hook and a leather eye patch. Mouth agape, the bartender says, “What in the bloody hell happened to you, mate?”

To which the pirate responded, “Well… about 2 weeks out we spotted a rival pirate ship about 50 yards yonder. We decided it wasn’t a good time for battle and tried to avoid the skirmish, but they let loose a few cannonballs and one of them claimed me leg.”

“That’s rough, mate…” chimed in the bartender. “What about your hand?”

“Me hand?” The pirate said. “Well, not 5 weeks back we ran into the blighters again. This time we decided to take our revenge and move in for battle. I lost me good hand in a sword fight, but no matter, I ran the fellow through.”

“Well, I’m glad you got your revenge… it’s too bad about your hand though…” Said the bartender sympathetically. “…and the eye?”

“Oh… me poor ol’ eye… shortly after that there battle I looked up to get a readin’ on the weather and a confoundin’ pigeon took a plop in me eye!”

The bartender was astonished… “A bit o’ bird droppings caused you to lose yer eye!?”

“No, no…” responded the pirate. “T’was me first day with me new hook…”
Sherri Ann: it’s 2 weeks out to sea… you know, 2 weeks into the journey… and 5 weeks ago, as in 5 weeks before arriving at the bar.

A: Good one.

Q: What can I do for really dry flaky skin?
Just about a month ago, I started to get these really dry and rough, flaky patches on my face. mostly on my cheeks near my nose and mouth. I moisterize twice a day, and I make sure I rub it in completely. I also use a face scrub two or three times a week, but it doesn’t really help. I still get pimples too, even though my skin is really dry. What should I do??

A: First, avoid using bar soaps, it’s not only bad for your skin (all over), is not hygienic. Also the same ingredient in bar soaps that cause of the crust all over your shower tub and walls, stays in your skin, clog your pores and wont let moisturizers to work properly. Use only *moisturizing* liquid soaps, I know it’s difficult to get use to it in the beginning (many say that it feels like it cant be rinsed, but that’s the moisturizing working). Liquid soap is very hygienic, it helps your skin condition adding extra moisture, and will help to keep your shower walls cleaner longer. To make the process even more productive, use washcloth to scrub your skin, it feels wonderful!!!!!

My personal formula to keep my skin moisturized is to use a moisturizing lotion (“Nivea” is my favorite brand), and I also buy Neutrogena Body Oil (you can buy the generic brand at Walmart). Then I mix half and half of each one in a lotion pump and rub it all over my skin *immediately* after taking a shower when the skin pores are open and clean, so the lotion works better………

Good luck!!

Q: PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE!!?
Lately I’ve been having this need to always clear my throat/cough. Today my throat started feeling really congested and DRY and it feels like there something stuck in there all the time, like phlegm. I always sniffle to which makes it even worse. Then, I became super nervous becasue the right side of my throat began to feel swollen, but in the mirror looked normal. I can’t stop clearing my throat/coughing and I never feel relief! I’m nervous i’m gonna suffacate, and my throat will close up! It also feels a little tight, especially when i hold it. What is this?

PS I took benedryl last night but it seems to keep coming back. The roof of my mouth also has a rough patch.
Also, I DO NOT smoke/drink.

A: Allergies?? Could be , there are all kinds of symptoms with allergies. I
have heard that the throat seems to feel swollen with allergies also. See a doctor and get some meds if it is an allergy.

Q: Side on the inside of my mouth is irritated from too much sugar? Small brownish spots? Help?
On a plane ride, I nervously went through a ton of very sugary candy on the right side of my mouth, hoping to keep away a sinus toothache. (Which is the worst feeling I’ve ever experienced)
Long story short, I had a ton of acidic candy (such as sour patch) rubbed directly along the inside of the right side ofmy mouth.
Now that side on the inside of my mouth is irritated and rough feeling? In fact it has a few small brown spots that bleed a little if I brush them.
Also, I was brushing my teeth today and I noticed a whiteish covering (much like the skinish stuff that results from warming up a glass of milk)
I’m not sure if I should take it off as it may help with healing?
What is this, is this normal, should I worry, what can I do about it?
Thank you so much for your help!

A: You may have to get a filling done if the brown spot is in the tooth.

Otherwise, just maintain good oral hygiene and then see a dentist in due course of time.

Q: when would you say it’s the end of a marriage, and when it’s only a “long” rough patch?
We’ve been married only over a year now (second marriage for both), and now for the last few days, my husband doesn’t talk to me. Now, being different from him, I can’t stay in silence forever so every attempt I do to try to make friendly and light conversation with him does not really work. He doesn’t get angry or anything because I am having conversation with him. It’s just that, after a while, oops! I feel like I’ve put my foot in my mouth again. It’s like walking on eggshells. This silence is slowly killing me… :( ( I feel he is simply so far away from me… more and more… and I don’t know what to do… I know he would refuse conselling… I’m so sad… I’m tired of trying, but I don’t want to fail again!… I need to feel loved to be loving, so I am desperate to have connection through trivial conversation… Sometimes I’m a clutz at it — he seems so “laisse-faire”… A marriage is both people fighting to keep it. But I don’t think he is fighting much to keep it. But maybe he wants it, but he simply puts the responsibility on my shoulder to keep it together? I don’t know. But I think I am making things worse by trying… i don’t know anymore… I’m just so at the end!…. Thanks for your feedback based on opinion and/or experience.
we had a fight, then he stopped talking to me for the last few days, but despite the ’silence’, and me trying to do small talk with him, it doesn’t seem like it’s getting any better… I feel like I am the cause of the ship sinking deeper.

I should actually go to bed now for work tomorrow morning… but I am just so restless and tense about this whole thing…. He has moved downstairs since the fight.

A: Something is obviously bothering him and he doesn’t know how to approach the topic with you. I could be something at work, his family or something personal. Let him know that his silence treatment is killing you and that you would rather he be honest and let you know what’s going on. Hopefully he’ll open up and you two can work our whatever is causing him to act this way.
