Q: after many yrs. smokefree, smoked for 1 night. Now 10 days later, I have asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis fever?
Taking med for urinary tract infect. ,inhaler for asthma and cough suppressants. Can’t lie down without coughing. Also taking extra omeprazole for GERD

A: i don’t think that you can catch asthma, the rest is pure coincidence.

Q: My doctor prescribed Asmanex Twisthaler for laryngitis?
My doctor prescribed Asmanex Twisthaler for laryngitis..I was a little dismayed with this because the package insert said it was for asthma. I asked the pharmacist and he checked and couldn’t find any information for it to be used for laryngitis. Have you ever heard of this? I haven’t used it yet because it’s a steroid and nothing I can find substantiates the use for laryngitis.

A: frankly if i were instead you i will first ask the doc why then if i wasn’t convinced i would stop taking it may be he is making trial research for the company or have certain business with such company

Q: has anybody heard of a fungus that can cause respiratory problems and laryngitis in people with weak immunity?
I have had a hoarse, raspy voice develop over the last month after having asthma type wheezing for about 6 weeks and being on several courses of prednisone, singulair, advair and abuterol. I read somewhere that a fungus can cause hoarseness and respiratory problems in people with weakened immune systems and wondered if that may be what has caused my problems. anyone heard of this happening?

A: It could be the cause of it, molds ( which are fungus ) can cause alot of problems. if you are on those types of medications i would definatly talk to your doctor about it.

Can i just ask out of curiosity why you are taking all of those??

Q: What causes tachycardia? Any foods in particular?
Recently, I’ve been experiencing tachycardia and palpitations. They occur most usually 2 hours after I eat, or sometimes at random moments. My emotions are fine. I’m 17. I take stress easy. I took an ekg 2 weeks ago and my heart was normal. I have a peptic ulcer, history of asthma and laryngitis. My mother’s family is diabetic and has low blood pressure while my dad’s side of the family has high blood pressure.
Most of the time my Pr is 114 or higher. Once it was 130 but I was resting in a chair the whole time. Sometimes it goes down to 90. But other times when I’m completely rested, it starts hurting and it rises to 90’s and then 100.
I also have pitted nails. Any relation ?

A: The chance of developing tachycardia increases as a person ages. Fewer than one in every 100 people in their 50s has tachycardia, but about 10 in every 100 people in their 80s have the condition.

Some people with tachycardia have heart disease. Some have atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Others have different heart problems, such as:

•Long-term high blood pressure (hypertension)
•Abnormalities of the heart valves
•Pericarditis, inflammation of the saclike covering of the heart (pericardium)
•Abnormalities of the heart’s pumping function
•Dysfunction of the heart’s natural pacemaker (sinus node)
•Damaged heart muscle, also called cardiomyopathy

Q: Contracting severe laryngitis overnight and acute bronchitis on second day?
When my doctor diagnosed me with laryngitis, he gave me antibiotics and said that I’ll heal in about three days. I felt awfully crap.

The next day after the diagnosis (3:00 am) I started getting severe asthma. In the morning I was taken to the doctor, was diagnosed with acute bronchitis, and ended up in hospital.

My doctor was so surprised that the infection spread so quickly – in just 2 days.

How is it that something so common and can easily heal suddenly turn into a breathless infection? Is it something to do with my immune system? Or something that I’d been doing the days before I got sick?

A: Most upper respiratory infections are viral in nature, and laryngitis just means something has inflammed your larynx, or vocal chords. Sometimes they give you antibiotics to help prevent anything bacterial moving in while it has the chance- bacteria and viruses can be pretty nasty that way. Antibiotics don’t have any effect on a virus, though. It could be you were just particularly sensitive to the one you caught, and it managed to get the upper hand fairly quickly before your body could respond and kick viral butt. It’s not common for that to happen, no- not with an otherwise healthy adult. But it can and does happen. Could be you were a little extra run down when you caught your buggie, could be you were burning the candle at both ends when you first got sick. If you were trying to supress the fever that shows up sometimes, it could be that’s what gave it the upper hand. Fever is not an enemy to you unless it gets over 102, or you aren’t holding down fluids. Your body cells can work quite well in higher temperatures, but a virus or bacteria can’t reproduce – it’s a good first defense to limit the invading numbers. But if you supressed your fever with aspirin, Motrin or Tylenol, you could have provided just enough boost to the virus to let it get ahead. Honestly, though, it’s usually a combination of these things, and sometimes it’s just one tough bug. It’s not always possible to say with certainty why a virus barely bothers one person and puts another one on their back in the hospital. Think back to things you were doing or not doing in those days just as you were getting sick, and those few days before it took the nasty turn. If you weren’t exactly resting and drinking plenty, and were fighting the fever to get it back down to normal levels, then you may have been the deciding factor. If you were just tired and worn out when you got sick, it may be your immune system wasn’t quite all that it should have been. And it may just have been one tough buggie. I wouldn’t spend a lot of time worrying about it, though. Just keep in mind, when you get sick- don’t fight to keep a fever at normal levels. Things aren’t normal, and the higher temperature is actually an aid to your body fighting. Rest, sleep, drink loads and eat well. That will give you the best shot at beating whatever buggie you are up against. And sometimes, well- you just need a little something else to help.

Q: Croup, Asthma or Virus?
I had laryngitis about 2 weeks ago with nodules and my voice has come back. Now I am dealing with this tightness in my larynx, trachea and upper bronchi. I have this horrible wheezy cough that alternates from my throat and chest. Not much phlegm. Just a little. Its just a horrible tickle, tightness. It has been extremely humid and rainy in MI. I used an inhaler and it helped only a little. My son has sounded the same for the last two weeks. Almost like croup. He coughs but its not that bad. He said his throat was tight and then his chest was tight and know its back in his throat. He was hoarse for a long while also. I have never been diagnosed with asthma. I have been smoking for quite a while. Any suggestions? I have no allergies. Just tested. Maybe its the high mold count?

A: Sounds like bronchitis
This is a pattern I used to have…cold…laryngitis…bronchitis.

Then I got my albuterol inhaler and used it during the bronchitis stage (something like 3 times a day) and I got better quicker than before.

The worse part is what seems like you are in now, the transition between laryngitis and bronchitis. After a few days you’ll probably feel better (but still have a cough).

If your son is under 5 years old he should be seen by a doctor.

Q: Doctors- Help with Laryngitis?
A month ago, my singing voice (high notes) dissapeared, after a cold and an asthma flare, treated with a higher dosage of Advair. I can manage a high note, if I force it. My voice is still gone, and I have a musical to be in very soon. I drink loquat honey and throat coat tea, as my voice teacher ordered. I still speak at a normal rate (a lot) because I haven’t had any trouble with normal speech. I do not cough. I am no longer sick. I really need help, and I plan on seeing my doctor. If you’re not a doctor, get your 2 pts off of some other question!

A: There are 3 things that you can do to help resolve your laryngitis:

1) Hydration (which you are doing)

2) Humidification (sleep with a humidifier in your room, use a humidifying device like you may have seen on TV, or breathe in over clean boiling water – far away enough to not burn yourself).

3) Voice rest. That means using even your speaking voice as little as possible. Avoid raising your voice if at all possible.

That said, your doctor can do something to help – he can prescribe you a course of corticosteroids, which are generally reserved for use only in cases where someone needs to urgently use their voice. If he does give you steroids, he’ll want to make sure to see you again to determine if there are any underlying problems which caused your acute laryngitis.

Q: Could I have ….Bronchitis? Laryngitis?
I have had a really bad cough and sore thorat for 2/3 months now. Lately Ive started having a fever, flushed face and dizzness. I am a swimmer and have a really hard time breathing while swimming.

I do not have asthma.
I had blood test and it is not mono or allegries.

Please help…….

Thank you!! :)
I am also having alot of trouble breathing and it is starting to scare me becuase everytime i go to swim practice i cant breathee and im really weak, dizzy and tired!!

A: most likely bronchitis
it is when you get dizzy and start to cough
but be careful when you cough you throw up sometimes
when i had it i threw up every 10 minutes when i cough

Q: Heavy chest, difficulty breathing and cough…? Any ideas?
I woke up this morning feeling a slight chest pain like someone was sitting on my chest. Later on in the day I started coughing and whenever I take a deep breath it’s difficult, causes chest pain and makes me cough (which is making my throat hurt). I’m 26, female, smoker (although I’m in the process of quitting, about 5-8 a day), have been diagnosed with “excersize induced asthma” in the past. Not taking any medications, average weight etc. Any ideas on what this could be? I’ve been searching and see anything from laryngitis, bronchitis, pnemonia, cold, asthma etc. (excuse my spelling). Help!

A: Pain with deep breath and coughing could be as simple as a chest cold, bronchitis, pneumonia or pleurisy (inflammation of the lining on the lungs). Are you coughing anything up? If so, I would lean toward the bronchitis or pneumonia. If not, I’d lean more toward the pleurisy. If it gets worse or does not improve in a couple of days, I’d see a doctor.

Q: Tightness in chest and cough…what could it be?

No kidding go see a doctor…kind of hard to do late on a Sunday night, no?

A: Sounds like you should be seeing someone with professional medical training (i.e. a doctor) and not asking for help on yahoo answers.

Q: Please help im barking like a dog?

A: Get your doctor to refer you to a specialist.

Q: Range of chest, nose and throat symptoms?
I suffered from Bronchitis as a child, it then developed into asthma and grew out of it in my late teens. After having my first child, 6 months later we all got the flu. Since then (june 07) I haven’t been the same. Re-occurring tonsillitis for one, with seldom colds and chestiness. Specialist said that I need the tonsils out, a month ago all of a sudden I got the greenest mucus out of my nose which lasted for weeks, blowing and blowing my nose, day in and day out. Now for the past two weeks I have a sore cough. I cough up green mucus, at night its more slimy/foamy consistency and it gets really bad. My chest seems to fill up at night, which makes me cough and until I clear the chest I just can’t sleep for a second, neither can my daughter (now 17 months) or my husband. I also have laryngitis and pharyngitis. Doc now thinks that maybe Asthma is coming back, so I’m on ventolin, vitamins and antibiotics. Help! Sick of being sick.
Hi,
I haven’t had my tonsils out yet. I’m on a waiting list. I have concerns about getting my tonsils removed in the sense that they won’t guarantee that my problems will go away. What if the problems don’t go away and I’m minus my tonsils. I have spoken to people that have had the operation and so far 50% say it solved their problems and the other 50% it came back. If I get called i will get them out anyway, at least if it solves my sore throat problem I’ll be happy with that, then I can tackle the rest. Process of elimination I guess.

A: Did you have your tonsils out, it could be the real solution that is needed?
By now common sense is that your immune system is so weak you are picking up secondary and third illnesses.
Do what the specialist suggested, that is what you paid him for.
Get rid of the primary culprit. the tonsils and the others problems will fall by the way side.

Sounds like now you are only treating symptoms.

Q: I have to get a PFT .. pulmonary function test.. what does this entail?
The doc thinks I have severe asthma that causes me to get sick All the time.. ive had bronchitis twice, laryngitis three times, and a lung infection all since the start of 09… what do they do in a pft??

A: you sit down,
they hand you a tube with a mouthpiece that is connected to a computer. They will tell you exactly what to do. You breathe in and out in a series of manuevers suchs as take in a deep breath and then blow it out as fast as you can. They will coach you for your best effort. Depending on how you do, they will give you some albuterol and then repeat the test to see if the medication helps. No blood, no needles.

Q: I’m confused about my doctor visit today? Please help?
I went to the doctor today because I woke up with a severe throat ache. It started hurting yesterday, then today when I woke up it was 10x worse. Not only did I have a sore throat, I was having trouble breathing. The doctor said most of it had to do with my Asthma.

They tested me for Strep Throat and Laryngitis, but both game back negative. They told me to take Motrin for my throat, but that’s all they told me.

I took the Motrin earlier and it helped, then it came back, I took some more, but I still as worse as I yesterday and this morning.

What can I do? They told me I didn’t have strep throat or anything, but I’m still in severe pain?

Other symptoms-

-Headache.
-Difficulty breathing.
-Red throat.

Thanks in advance.<3
Sorry for some of the messed up grammar, I’m just really tired.

A: It would appear that you just have a simple virus that is dominated by sore throat and cold symptoms. There is not a magic pill for everything and if you came up negative for both infections, then the doctor would not need to prescribe antibiotics.
It will just have to run its course. Take the motrin regularly and gargle with very warm saltwater every four hours. It really will help the pain.

Q: Do you think i have Hodgkin’s or Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?
little over a year and a half ago i found a small bump, about the size of a jellybean on the back of my neck, it is slowly getting bigger.
i am constantly sick, usually with something that has to do with my throat, i just had strep throat, and now i have laryngitis
i have trouble breathing, i was told that i have asthma.. but my doctor didn’t weigh out all the options.
i also checked into the hospital about six months ago for extreme pain in my chest, sort of like a stabbing pain.
i have had the worst headaches i have ever experienced within the past few months, on the both sides of my head towards the back
i have been having a lot of trouble sleeping, constantly waking up in the night.. and before this i was a very calm sleeper.
i am a sixteen year old female in canada, and i checked some statistics from stats canada and it said that lymphoma is one of the leading cancers in children,
do you think i could have lymphoma?
please help!
*My parents and my doctor both know, they are looking at it and seeing if it grows, i am scheduled to go to see a neurologist next month

A: No you haven’t got it.
The doc would’ve found it by now.
The trouble is your headaches.
That confuses the issue with this type of cancer.
The bump getting bigger would’ve been biopsied by now by your Doctor so I don’t believe this would have been ignored.
